Summer has arrived in Europe! In Holland we are experiencing a true heat wave, with Thursday being the hottest day on record. They expect that Saturday July 4th will break all records. We are facing 41 degrees in the South of Holland. Time to cool off…

With this kind of weather you don’t want to drink hot drinks, but some of us do need their portion of caffeine, like me. The solution for this is an obvious one: ICED COFFEE.

How to make one yourself?

There are two versions you can make; there is the plain version and the luxury version with ice cream. As I am a sucker for ice cream, I will go for the luxury variant.

What do you need?

  • Coffee (I use instant – Nescafe Gold)
  • Water
  • Ice cubes
  • Sugar or sweetener (if preferred)
  • Vanilla ice cream

How to brew?

Make sure you have enough ice cubes in the freezer.

Make your usual coffee but a bit stronger as the ice cubes will melt and the coffee will lose its strength (pro tip: you can also freeze your own coffee ice cubes to mitigate this). This might need some practice in how strong you want it. I usually go for a double portion.

If you need extra sweetener, mix this through your coffee before you add the ice cubes. The sweetener will otherwise not dissolve that well because of the coldness.

Put about 1/2 of your glass full with ice cubes and 1/2 with coffee. Make a good stir. The cherry on the cake will be 1 or 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream.

Tip: Try Hazelnut ice cream to change the flavor.
